Jujutsu Kaisen【ch.247】Full-page explanation
Hi everyone, こんにちは!
This is Kyle Scouter.
Welcome to a thrilling journey into the dark and mystic world of Jujutsu Kaisen!
In this blog, I will break down each panel, offering insightful commentary and analysis to enhance your understanding of the story, characters, and the fascinating world created by Gege Akutami Sensei.
I’ve created visual aids to help illustrate each point on every page, making it easier to follow the details.
I’m sure everyone was amazed at how great Higuruma was in Ch.247.
And everyone would have despaired at the strength of Sukuna. Then the last panel ended in a way that made us curious about what would happen next.
First, let’s make sure we comprehend 100% about this chapter so we can be ready for the next!
Before Explanation
Before explaining each page, let me explain the basics of how to read manga.
Right → Left
Top → Bottom
This is the basic rule.
See the images for specifics.
I follow this rule in my commentary.
I state what number of panels on each page.
・For descriptions, etc
I quote panels from Jujutsu Kaisen manga.
・For Japanese, history, environment, etc
I list the order of the panels and the description.
So let’s get started!!
P1 ① Exploring the Editor’s Comment on Higuruma: Exclusive to the Japanese Version
Take a look at this noteworthy comment from the editor, found only in the Japanese version of the manga:
「天才」日車、その才能の輝きとはー
Translated, it reads: “Genius” Nichiguruma, the brilliance of his talentー
This comment highlights the widespread recognition of Higuruma’s exceptional genius within the storyline.
P1 ② Points to Note in Domain Amplification
When activating Domain Amplification, you can’t use the Technique. What Sukuna is emphasizing here is the need to avoid nullifying the activated Technique when using Amplification. Interruption is necessary. This task is quite challenging since Sukuna is extremely cautious.
Moreover, there’s a mistranslation present. In the English version, Sukuna states, ‘I was extremely careful that Malevolent Shrine’s adaptation up to that point was interrupted and not nullified.’ However, it should be ‘Mahoraga’s adaptation,’ not ‘Malevolent Shrine.’ Reading it solely in English might make it difficult to grasp the context.
P1 ③Analyzing Sukuna’s Phrase: Recognition of Higuruma’s Abilities
Sukuna acknowledges Higuruma’s exceptional capabilities, comparing them to his own. Higuruma, who mirrors Sukuna’s actions during the battle with Gojo, impresses Sukuna himself. This is a significant acknowledgment considering Sukuna’s reputation as the strongest in history, especially demonstrated in his fight against Gojo. Remarkably, Higuruma, with only about two months of experience as a sorcerer, exhibits skills on par with Sukuna. His ability to master techniques at such a level in a short time frame truly sets him apart as more than a genius.
P2 ① Deciphering Sukuna’s Phrase: The Significance of Naming Higuruma (日車寛見/Higuruma Hiromi)
Sukuna’s decision to call Higuruma by name is noteworthy, given his usual reluctance to acknowledge individuals in this manner. Due to his prolonged existence and the countless individuals he has encountered, particularly those defeated swiftly in battle, Sukuna rarely remembers or mentions names. To date, he has recognized only a few individuals by name, notably Gojo and Megumi.
Gojo, renowned as the mightiest sorcerer and a figure comparable to Sukuna, and Megumi, with his exceptional talent and potential as a vessel, are the only others to receive this distinction. Higuruma’s inclusion in this exclusive circle is a testament to his special status.
Sukuna’s acknowledgement indicates he views Higuruma as an exceptional individual, a reason for Higuruma to feel a sense of pride.
P4 ③ Analyzing Sukuna’s Tactical Move Against Higuruma
In a strategic maneuver, Sukuna shatters a small rock, aiming to hit Higuruma. This action is intended to impair Higuruma’s vision. Sukuna is aware that a strike from the Executioner’s Sword could be lethal for him. Therefore, his tactic is to blind Higuruma, allowing Sukuna to move behind him and gain a tactical advantage in the confrontation.
P5 ② Unleashing Cleave: A Lethal Blow for Yuji?
Sukuna touched Yuji’s rib area and unleashed Cleave, an attack potent enough to cause instantaneous death. In Chapter 246, Kusakabe mentioned, ”Cleave, Dismantle at Zero range, and the slashes that cut the world are impossible to defend against using Cursed Energy reinforcement, Amplification, or a Simple Domain. Thus, they generally result in instant death.” Therefore, this likely spells instant death for Yuji…
P6 ③ What?!! More than half of Yuji’s body is cut off
Look at Yuji’s body here. More than half of Yuji’s body has been sliced into pieces. This certainly gives the impression that he’s dead, doesn’t it? Upon closer inspection, you’ll notice even his left arm has been severed. How could Yuji possibly return to battle so swiftly after this? I speculate it’s due to Yuji’s newfound ability to utilize the Reverse Cursed Technique. Otherwise, it’s difficult to fathom how he could recover and return so rapidly after such a grievous injury.
P6 ④ Exploring the Nuances of “興が湧かんのだ(Kyouga Wakannoda)”
Sukuna uses the phrase “興が湧かんのだ(Kyouga Wakannoda)” when addressing Yuji, which in English means “You don’t thrill me at all.” This phrase is an archaic Japanese expression, roughly translating to “I don’t feel inclined to do it” or “I don’t feel interested in it.”
Why am I paying attention to this word?
This is an expression that represents Sukuna’s character and is difficult for non-Japanese speakers to understand.
It conveys a lack of enthusiasm or interest in participating in a specific activity or a general lack of motivation. Being an old-fashioned expression, it’s rarely used in modern language.
In contemporary terms, one would say “興味が湧かないんだ(Kyoumiga Wakanainnda)” to express a similar sentiment. The use of 興(Kyou) as opposed to 興味(Kyoumi) for “interest” indicates its archaic nature, reflecting Sukuna’s origins from an older era.
A very old-fashioned phrase.
It is said that Sukuna was a real person who existed over a thousand years ago, and his choice of words is what he would have used in that era.
P9 ③ Interesting theory about Sukuna’s Technique “番の流星(Tugai no Ryusei)/Paired Falling Star”
Sukuna’s Crsed chant is “番の流星(Tugai no Ryusei)/Paired Falling Star”. And there is an interesting theory about his Technique.
It is about “Sukuna has 4 kinds of Techniques and he can switch between them”.
This is a video talking about the theory.
https://youtu.be/XMePTg5CPSY?si=VRtTRzDMMXxLCeMM
Sukuna’s Technique is based on The Star Mandala and 宿曜経(Xiuyaojing astrology).
Star Mandala is an esoteric view of the universe that links the stars with Buddhist deities and shows them as a mandala.
Xiuyaojing astrology is a kind of old astrology.
This is closely related to Sukuna’s Technique.
Sukuna’s Cursed Chant “番の流星(Paired Falling Star)” is similar to the 夫婦宮(Palace of the Couple) in Xiuyaojing astrology.
It is a paraphrase of Gemini.
In the Star Mandala, each zodiac sign has elements and has one of fire, water, earth, or wind.
Gemini has the element of wind.
So slashing such as Dismantle and Cleave can be like kamaitachi using wind.
And the way Fuga shoots flame arrows implies Sagittarius , which has the element of Fire in Start Mandala.
Fuga is like a chant to switch between those elements.
Considering this, there could be two more hidden tactics in Sukuna, using the elements of Water and Earth?
Also Fuga is appeared in Gege Sensei’s previous manga “No. 9”.
Tsukumo, the main character in that manga, would pull out various weapons from a box when he chanted Fuga.
Gege Sensei may have applied this idea to Sukuna.
This is the theory about this. What do you think about it?
But if this theory is true, then it means Sukuna still has 2 more Techniques. Even now we are struggling against Sukuna, and if he uses any more techniques, we won’t stand a chance.
P9 ③ Decoding the Significance of Sukuna’s Finger Patterns
Have you ever wondered about the meaning behind Sukuna’s finger patterns in his techniques? Sukuna often uses Dismantle with one hand, yet the positioning of his fingers frequently changes. For instance, in Chapter 247, he uses two fingers. During his battle with Gojo, it’s one finger, and against Kashimo, five fingers.
It seems the power of Dismantle fluctuates with the number of fingers involved. This suggests Sukuna strategically adjusts the power according to the number of fingers he uses.
Did this catch your attention? What are your thoughts on the implications of these finger patterns? Share your insights with us!
